Making hands-on science learning more accessible to students in rural and underserved communities, starting in Karene District, Sierra Leone.
The Rural Science Practical Initiative (RSPI) is an emerging community-based educational initiative working to make practical science education more accessible to students in rural and underserved communities.
Beginning in Karene District, Sierra Leone, RSPI supports schools through supervised demonstrations, laboratory orientation, and affordable hands-on learning experiences. We aim to help students observe, question, experiment, and connect scientific ideas to everyday life.
RSPI is developing as a community initiative and is preparing for formal registration. We do not claim registered NGO status at this stage.

Our work begins with accessible learning activities that complement classroom teaching and encourage safe scientific exploration.
Guided demonstrations and introductory experiments, including separation techniques, filtration, evaporation, and titration concepts.
Introducing students to laboratory conduct, common apparatus, protective equipment, and safe handling practices.
Developing student-friendly practical manuals and supporting materials for participating schools.
RSPI began engaging schools and education stakeholders in Karene District to explore opportunities for practical science learning.
Students were introduced to laboratory safety, scientific equipment, and the role of practical science in learning.
Grow school partnerships, deliver supervised practical activities, and develop a pathway toward shared science facilities.

Our ambition is to extend hands-on science learning to more rural districts across Sierra Leone and, over time, work toward shared laboratory facilities and a centre that supports scientific learning, research, and innovation.
Build sustainable relationships with schools and local education stakeholders.
Expand access to appropriate equipment, materials, and supervised activities.
Explore the development of a central science laboratory and eventual research capabilities.

Founder, Rural Science Practical Initiative
Engr. Alfred B. Monsigia is a Chemical Engineering graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, and a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).
Since 2024, he has been involved in the education sector, contributing to science education and student development through educational engagements in Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
Drawing on his engineering background and experience working with students, he founded the Rural Science Practical Initiative to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and hands-on scientific learning, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
His vision is to make practical science education more accessible while encouraging curiosity, innovation and scientific discovery among young learners.
NSE membership refers to the founder's professional affiliation and does not imply NSE endorsement of RSPI.
We welcome conversations with schools, educators, volunteers, community leaders, and organizations interested in supporting practical science education. Collaboration may include learning materials, equipment, expertise, or school partnerships.
